In 2026 the visa in your passport is the first thing a Thai bank checks, and some visas are refused before you even sit down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"lead wp-block-paragraph\">Below is how banks treat each visa type, which documents they ask for, and what to do if you are on a tourist visa or were already refused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In short<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list glance\"><li><strong>Easiest:<\/strong> a work visa with a work permit, or a retirement visa.<\/li><li><strong>Usually possible:<\/strong> a student (ED) visa with a school letter, and Thailand Privilege (Elite).<\/li><li><strong>Hard:<\/strong> DTV, depending on the bank and the branch.<\/li><li><strong>Rarely possible:<\/strong> a tourist visa or visa-free entry at most major banks.<\/li><li><strong>Always needed:<\/strong> a Thai address and a Thai phone number; many branches also ask for a certificate of residence.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why the visa matters so much<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Banks must know who you are and why you need a Thai account. A long-stay visa shows that you live here and explains your income. A tourist stamp shows that you will leave soon, so the bank cannot be sure how the account will be used. After the wave of scam and mule-account cases, banks became much stricter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls preload=\"metadata\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unblockpro.asia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/38.-Which-visa-can-you-use-to-open-a-Thai-bank-account_2.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visa by visa<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Work visa (Non-B) with a work permit.<\/strong> The easiest case. Bring the work permit and, if the bank asks, a letter from your employer.<\/li><li><strong>Retirement or family visa (Non-O, O-A).<\/strong> Usually accepted. Some branches ask how you meet the visa\u2019s financial requirement.<\/li><li><strong>Student visa (ED).<\/strong> Often accepted with an enrollment letter, but the school matters. Some branches accept only schools from their own list.<\/li><li><strong>Thailand Privilege (Elite).<\/strong> Many banks accept it as a long-stay visa. One of our clients opened an SCB account on it. <a href=\"\/en\/bangkok-bank-police-hold-udon-thani-scb-account\/\">Read the case<\/a><\/li><li><strong>DTV (Destination Thailand Visa).<\/strong> Depends on the bank and even the branch. Prepare proof of address and income. <a href=\"\/en\/can-you-open-a-thai-bank-account-with-a-dtv-visa\/\">DTV and Thai bank accounts<\/a><\/li><li><strong>Tourist visa or visa-free entry.<\/strong> Most major banks refuse. A few branches still open accounts with strong extra documents, such as a long rental contract and a certificate of residence, but it is never guaranteed.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Documents banks usually ask for<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Passport with the current visa and the latest entry stamp<\/li><li>A certificate of residence from Thai immigration or your embassy<\/li><li>Proof of your Thai address: a rental contract or a utility bill<\/li><li>A Thai phone number in your name for the banking app<\/li><li>A work permit, a school letter or other papers that explain why you live in Thailand<\/li><li>The first deposit, usually a small amount<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each branch has some freedom. Two branches of the same bank can give different answers on the same day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If you were refused<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Ask why.<\/strong> Ask the staff which document was missing. The answer tells you what to fix.<\/li><li><strong>Fix the weak point.<\/strong> Add the missing paper, or improve the visa or the address proof, before you try again.<\/li><li><strong>Choose the branch.<\/strong> Branches in areas with many foreigners are often more used to foreign clients.<\/li><li><strong>Do not try ten banks in a row.<\/strong> Many refusals with the same documents waste weeks. Change the documents, not only the bank.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">After the account is open<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Opening is only half the job. An account that receives money from many people, crypto or P2P payments can be restricted later, especially on a short-term visa. We collected them the same day and interpreted at the branch, and the account was opened.<\/li><li><strong>Student visa, Krungsri.<\/strong> A client at a private school was first refused because the school was not on the bank\u2019s list.
