Which Thai Bank Is Easiest for Foreigners in 2026? How Banks Differ and How to Choose
Opening a bank account
Foreigners often ask which Thai bank is the easiest. The honest answer: there is no easy bank anymore. All Thai banks follow the same anti-money laundering rules, and the result depends far more on your visa, documents and the branch than on the bank’s name.
Below: what banks check, how the main banks usually differ for foreigners, how to choose the bank and branch, and what to do if you have already been refused.
In short
- Your profile matters more than the bank. Visa, address, income and the reason for the account decide most cases.
- The branch matters more than the brand. Two branches of the same bank can give different answers on the same day.
- A work permit or a long-stay visa opens most doors. On a tourist visa, many branches will say no.
- Do not go from bank to bank unprepared. Prepare once and choose the branch carefully.
What every Thai bank checks
- Your visa and length of stay. Banks prefer a long-stay visa: work, business, retirement, marriage, education or DTV.
- Proof of address in Thailand, such as a lease, a residence certificate or a letter from immigration or your embassy.
- The reason for the account: salary, business, pension, rent, study.
- Your source of money, especially for large or regular transfers from abroad.
- A Thai phone number in your name for mobile banking.
After opening, banks keep monitoring the account. An account that was easy to open can still be frozen later if the activity does not match your profile. Which visas work for a Thai bank account
How the main banks usually differ
This is what we see in our cases. It is not an official policy, and it changes often.
- Bangkok Bank. Long experience with foreigners and often clear about which documents it needs. Requirements are strict but more predictable than at many other banks.
- Kasikornbank (KBank). Popular with expats and business owners, with a strong mobile app. Much depends on the branch and your documents.
- Siam Commercial Bank (SCB). Widely used, with a good app. Some branches are open to foreigners with a long-stay visa, others refuse without a work permit.
- Krungsri (Bank of Ayudhya). Some branches accept foreigners with a long-stay visa and proof of address.
- Krungthai Bank. A state-owned bank, usually conservative with foreigners without a work permit.
For a business account, every bank asks for the company documents, the directors in person and a clear explanation of the business. Bank account opening help
How to choose the bank and the branch
- Start from your situation: which visa you have, what the account is for and how money will come in.
- Choose a branch that serves foreigners, often in central Bangkok or in areas where many foreigners live.
- Prepare the documents before the visit: passport, visa, proof of address, Thai phone number and a short letter about the purpose of the account.
- Explain clearly and consistently. The same story in the form, the letter and at the counter.
- If one branch refuses, find out why before you try the next one.
Common mistakes
- Visiting several banks in one day without documents
- Applying on a tourist visa without a clear reason for the account
- Not having proof of address in Thailand
- Giving a vague answer about the purpose of the account
- Following old advice from forums
- Using the new account for P2P crypto trades right after opening
If you have already been refused
A refusal is usually about the profile, not about you. Change what the bank did not like: a stronger visa, a proof of address, a letter about your income or a company with a business account. Then apply at a branch that works with foreigners, with a complete set of documents.
A typical situation
A freelancer on a tourist visa tries four banks and is refused everywhere. After registering a company and getting a Non-B visa and a work permit, he opens a business account and a personal account on the first visit. The bank did not change. His profile did. Questions we often hear
Can I open a Thai bank account on a tourist visa?
Sometimes, but most branches refuse or ask for extra documents. A long-stay visa or a work permit makes it much easier.
Which bank is best for foreigners?
There is no single best bank. Choose by your visa, what you need the account for and a branch that regularly works with foreigners.
Can I open an account online?
Usually not the first time. Foreigners normally have to come to the branch in person with the original documents.
Why was my account frozen soon after opening?
Usually because the activity did not match your profile, for example transfers from strangers after P2P trades. Frozen account help
