Why Thai Banks Freeze Accounts in 2026: Real Reasons and How to Avoid It
Frozen bank accounts
Yesterday the account worked. Today the app shows an error, the card is declined, and the branch only says: “Please contact the bank” or “Please call the investigator.” For a foreigner this feels random. It almost never is.
Below are the three kinds of freezes we see at Thai banks, the real reasons behind them, how to find out which one you have, and what to do so it does not happen.
In short
- Three kinds of freeze: the bank’s own KYC review, a police hold, or an order from AMLO or a court. Each is lifted differently.
- The most common reason we see: money from a stranger, often after a P2P crypto trade, that is linked to someone else’s police complaint.
- Find out first: ask the bank for a printout of the hold. It shows who froze the account.
- Thai banks are safe for your money: deposits are protected up to 1 million THB per person per bank. The risk is a frozen account, not a failing bank.
Three kinds of freeze, and how each is lifted
- The bank’s own review (KYC/AML). The bank sees activity that does not match your profile and asks for documents: source of funds, statements, contracts. It is lifted when the bank accepts your explanation.
- A police hold. Someone filed a complaint, and money linked to it reached your account. The bank cannot lift it alone. You need a release letter from the police station that opened the case.
- An AMLO or court order. The most serious kind, for large or repeated suspicious transfers. It needs formal statements and documents, and usually a licensed lawyer.
The real reasons accounts get frozen
- P2P crypto trades. One payment from a buyer whose money came from a scam is enough for a police hold.
- Helping friends with money. When you receive or exchange money for someone else, their risk moves to your account.
- Activity that does not match your visa. Regular business income on a personal account, or large transfers on a tourist visa.
- Money you cannot explain. Large transfers from abroad or cash deposits without any documents.
- Ignoring the bank. Not answering SMS or calls, or not bringing the documents the bank asked for.
How to find out who froze your account
Go to the branch with your passport and ask for a printout of the hold. It shows whether the restriction is the bank’s own or a police order, the date and the police station. In one of our cases, the printout showed a hold from Udon Thani police placed more than a year earlier.
There can be more than one case on one account. If the bank still does not release it after one letter, ask the cyber police or the 1441 hotline to check for other cases.
A real case: frozen for two years, released after three police visits
A client on a work visa let an acquaintance receive a payment into her SCB account. That money was linked to a police complaint, and the account was frozen by an Ayutthaya police order for about two years. Her own lawyer got no answer. We went to the police station three times, prepared an explanation letter in Thai, got the release letter and took it to the bank. About two weeks later the account was released. Read the full story
How to avoid a freeze
- Do not receive money from strangers. This includes P2P buyers whose name does not match the account.
- Do not lend your account. Not to friends, not even for one transfer.
- Use the account the way you told the bank. If your income changes, update the bank.
- Keep documents. For large transfers, keep contracts, invoices and statements from abroad.
- Answer the bank quickly. A KYC request ignored for weeks often turns into a full freeze.
Questions we often hear
Are Thai banks safe for foreigners?
Yes. Thai banks are regulated by the Bank of Thailand, and baht deposits are protected up to 1 million THB per depositor per bank. The real risk for foreigners is not losing a deposit but having an account frozen because of how it is used.
How long does it take to unfreeze a Thai bank account?
It depends on the kind of freeze. A bank review can end in a few days. A police hold usually takes from a few weeks to a couple of months, including the time the bank needs after the letter. AMLO and court cases take longer.
Can I open a new account if my old one is frozen?
Often not. Other banks may refuse while a police hold is active on your name. In one of our cases, a new account was opened only after the old hold was lifted.
Our dedicated site UnblockThaiBank.com explains each type of freeze and shows real cases.
Every case is different. The police and the bank make the final decision, and nobody can honestly guarantee that an account will be released.
