Why Your Bank Statement Matters in Thailand

“Please bring an official bank statement.” Foreigners hear this at immigration, at the police station and at the bank itself. Often the first statement they bring is not accepted, and the case loses a week.

Below is when you need a Thai bank statement, which version is accepted, and how to get it right the first time.

In short

  • App PDF or official statement: a screenshot or a PDF from the app is fine for your own records. Immigration and the police usually want a statement issued by the branch or a certified e-statement.
  • Where you need it: visa extensions, police cases, a frozen account, a new account, renting and proving your income.
  • Ask for the right period: it must cover the dates the officer or the bank asks about, including the disputed transfer.
  • A frozen account: the branch can usually still print a statement, so ask for it before you go to the police.

When you need a Thai bank statement

  • Visa extensions. For example, a retirement extension needs proof of money in a Thai account: a bank letter and the updated bank book or statement.
  • Police cases. The officer checks the disputed transfer and what happened before and after it.
  • A frozen account or a KYC request. The bank wants to see where the money came from and where it went.
  • A new account, a rental or a work permit. A statement from your home bank or your Thai bank shows a stable income.

Which statement is accepted

A screenshot or a PDF exported from the app is easy to edit, so officials often do not accept it. An official statement is printed by the branch, stamped and signed, or issued by the bank as a certified e-statement. Some offices also want to see the original bank book updated on the same day.

In one of our police cases, the officer asked for exactly this: an official bank statement for the period, plus the client in person. We collected it before the next visit, and the release letter was issued on the third trip. Read the full story

How to get an official statement

  1. Go to the branch with your passport and bank book. Any branch of your bank can usually print it, not only the one where you opened the account.
  2. Say the exact period and the purpose. For example, “January to March, for the police” or “for immigration”.
  3. Ask for a stamp and a signature on every page. Banks usually charge a small fee per page.
  4. Check it before you leave. Your name, the account number and the dates must be correct.

Some banks can issue a certified e-statement in the app or by email. Ask the branch whether the office you need will accept it.

Common mistakes

  • Bringing a screenshot instead of an official statement
  • A period that does not include the disputed transfer
  • Statements from only one account when the money moved between several
  • No explanation of large or unusual transfers

Questions we often hear

Can I get a statement if my account is frozen?

Usually yes. A frozen account still belongs to you, and the branch can normally print a statement. Ask for it with your passport and bank book.

How many months of statements do I need?

It depends on who asks. For a police case, the period around the disputed transfer. For a bank KYC check, often at least three months. For a visa, follow the current list of your immigration office.

Does the statement need to be translated?

Thai offices read Thai and English statements. For your home country, or if you need to explain certain transfers, a translation of the key entries helps.

Requirements differ between banks, police stations and immigration offices and can change. Always check the current list with the office that asks for the statement.
