Why You May Need to Go to the Anti-Money Laundering Office in Thailand (AMLO)?

AMLO, the Anti-Money Laundering Office, is the Thai authority that analyses suspicious money flows and can seize assets linked to crimes. Most foreigners hear about it when a bank account is frozen and the bank or the police say the case is also with AMLO.

Below: what AMLO does, why your account may be linked to it, how it differs from a police hold, what to prepare and why you should not wait.

In short

  • AMLO is not the police, but it often works on the same cases, such as fraud, scams and online gambling.
  • Banks report suspicious transactions to AMLO. A report does not mean you are accused of anything.
  • AMLO can seize money linked to a crime, and the owner then has to prove that the money is legitimate.
  • There are deadlines. If AMLO asks you to file a claim or documents, do it on time.

What AMLO does

  • Receives reports of suspicious and large transactions from banks and other businesses
  • Analyses money flows linked to crimes such as fraud, drugs, online gambling and scams
  • Can order a temporary seizure or freeze of assets and ask the court to confiscate them
  • Considers claims from people who say the money belongs to them legally

For an ordinary person, AMLO usually appears in one of two situations: the bank filed a report about unusual transactions, or the money in your account is linked to a case where AMLO seizes assets.

AMLO and a police hold: what is the difference

  • Police hold. The police ask the bank to hold the money because of a complaint. It is lifted with a letter from the police unit.
  • AMLO seizure. AMLO orders the assets to be seized as part of an anti-money laundering case. The money is released only if AMLO or the court accepts that it is legitimate.

One account can have both at the same time. Releasing the police hold does not automatically release an AMLO seizure, so you need to know exactly who restricted the account. How a police release letter works

Why your account may be linked to AMLO

  • Money came from a person or account that is part of a fraud or gambling case
  • Large or frequent transfers that the bank could not explain
  • P2P crypto trades with buyers who used stolen money
  • Business income received into a personal account without contracts or invoices

What to prepare

  1. Find out who restricted the account and get the case or order details from the bank.
  2. Collect proof of the source of funds: statements, contracts, invoices, salary records, exchange history.
  3. Write a clear explanation in Thai for each disputed transfer.
  4. Check the deadlines for filing a claim or submitting documents, and do not miss them.
  5. Keep the same story for the bank, the police and AMLO.

AMLO cases are often more formal than a police hold and may need a lawyer. If your money is seized, a licensed Thai lawyer usually prepares the claim.

Common mistakes

  • Ignoring the bank’s letters until the deadline has passed
  • Thinking that releasing the police hold will also release an AMLO seizure
  • Explaining the money only in words, without documents
  • Mixing personal, business and crypto money in one account
  • Trying to avoid the authorities instead of responding

A typical situation

An account receives money from a buyer after a crypto trade. The buyer’s money is linked to a scam, and the account is held by the police. Later it turns out that AMLO is also involved in the same case. The owner has to deal with both: the police statement and a claim with documents to AMLO. Every case is different, and the decision belongs to the authorities. A real case with police and AMLO

How we can help

We find out who restricted your account, organise the documents on the source of funds, prepare the explanation in Thai, go with you to the police or AMLO and keep track of the deadlines. We are not a law firm: when your case needs a formal claim, a licensed Thai lawyer prepares and signs it. We cannot promise the result, but we tell you honestly what is realistic before you pay.

Cases with a police, cyber police or AMLO hold usually from 74,900 THB, including 7% VAT. Lawyer fees are confirmed separately if needed. Fees and timelines

Questions we often hear

Does an AMLO report mean I am a criminal?

No. Banks report many unusual transactions. A report is a signal to check, not an accusation.

Can AMLO take my money?

AMLO can seize assets linked to a crime and ask the court to confiscate them. If the money is legitimate, you can file a claim with documents to get it back.

Do I need a lawyer?

For a formal claim or a court stage, usually yes. For collecting documents and explaining transfers, we can help before a lawyer is needed.

How long does it take?

AMLO cases usually take longer than a police hold, often several months, depending on the case and the documents.
