Thai bank account frozen: the first 24 hours

Your Thai bank app shows a restriction, a transfer fails, or the bank tells you the account is on hold. The money is still there, but you cannot use it. What you do on the first day often decides whether the case takes weeks or months.

Below is a step-by-step plan for the first 24 hours, the documents to collect, what to do if the police are involved, and an honest look at cases that are hard to solve.

In short

  • Find out who froze the account: the bank itself or the police. The whole plan depends on it.
  • Stay calm and keep everything as it is: do not move money between your other accounts.
  • Collect documents the same day: the statement, your passport and visa, proof of the disputed transfers.
  • Never ignore the police: a case without your explanation moves on without you.

Step by step: the first 24 hours

  1. Do not panic and do not delete anything. Keep the chats, screenshots and receipts for every recent transfer.
  2. Call the bank’s official hotline. Ask two questions: is the account restricted, and who placed the restriction, the bank or the police?
  3. Go to your branch with your passport. Ask for a printout of the restriction. If it is a police hold, it usually shows the police station and the date.
  4. Get your bank statement for the last 3–6 months, stamped by the bank. Both the bank and the police will ask for it.
  5. Find the transfer that caused it. Usually it is a P2P payment, money from a stranger or a large transfer without an explanation.
  6. Write down what happened: who sent the money, why and on which date. Later this story must match the documents.
  7. Do not open a new account to work around the freeze. Banks share information, and a second account opened in a hurry often gets restricted too.

Bank restriction or police hold?

  • Bank restriction. The bank wants documents or an explanation: KYC, source of funds, a visa update. It is usually solved at the branch. Source of funds documents
  • Police hold. Someone filed a complaint about a transfer, and the police asked the bank to freeze the account. The bank cannot lift it alone: you need a release letter from the police station that placed the hold. Police release letter

If the printout lists several police stations, each case has to be closed separately. If you are not sure how many cases there are, the 1441 hotline and the cyber police can help find them.

If the police contact you, do not ignore it

Many people hope a police case will go away if they stay silent. It will not. The officer works with the information they have, and without your explanation the case looks worse than it really is and can grow into a bigger problem.

  • Check that the call or letter is real: call the police station’s official number, not the number in the message.
  • Never pay anyone who calls as a police officer and promises to close the case for money.
  • Go to the station with your documents and, if you do not speak Thai, with an interpreter. Your statement must match the bank statement.
  • If you have already left Thailand, the case can often still be solved, but it takes more time. Do not wait for it to “expire”.

Mistakes that make it worse

  • Waiting for weeks and hoping the bank will fix it
  • Telling the bank and the police different stories
  • Going to the wrong police station
  • Paying someone online who promises to unfreeze the account fast
  • Continuing P2P trades with the same account while the case is open

Why some cases are hard to solve

Most frozen accounts can be released, but not every case ends the way the client wants, and some take months. We say this to clients before they pay.

  • The complainant wants the money back. The police may release the hold only after you agree on a refund.
  • Several cases on one account. Each case has to be closed with its own police station.
  • No documents for the money. If you cannot show where the money came from, the bank may keep the restriction.
  • Short-term visa. The bank may release the money but close the account.
  • The case went to court. Then only the court decides, and it can take a long time.

A real case

A client’s Bangkok Bank account had been frozen for about a year by a police hold from Udon Thani. He had left Thailand for a while and was told nothing could be done. We flew to Udon Thani, found the disputed transfer together with the officer, and the officer issued a release letter the same day. After that the account was unblocked. Read the full story

Questions we often hear

How long does it take to unfreeze a Thai bank account?

A bank restriction is often solved within days once the documents are ready. A police hold usually takes from a few weeks to a few months, depending on the number of cases and how fast the police and the bank respond. How to speed it up

Can the bank just close my account?

Yes, especially on a short-term visa. In that case the goal is to get the money out. A new account can be opened later with the right visa and documents.

I have left Thailand. Can the case still be solved?

Often yes. Some steps can be done through a representative, but the bank or the police may ask you to come in person. It is better to find out early which steps need you.
