Chaengwattana Government Complex Why Foreigners End Up Here

If your Thai bank account is frozen or the police want to talk to you about a transfer, you may be told to go to Chaeng Watthana or Muang Thong Thani. These are the areas in the north of Bangkok where many cyber police and immigration cases of foreigners are handled.

Below: what is located there, why your case may end up there, what to prepare and how to get through the visit without coming back several times.

In short

  • Chaeng Watthana is a government complex, not one office. Immigration and cyber police units both work there, in different buildings.
  • Cyber police cases are usually about money, such as a transfer from a scam victim, a P2P trade or an unclear source of funds.
  • Always confirm the exact unit, address and officer before you go. Cases are handled by a specific investigator.
  • Prepare documents and a clear explanation in Thai. One well-prepared visit is better than three unprepared ones.

What is at Chaeng Watthana

The Government Complex on Chaeng Watthana Road in Lak Si, Bangkok, is a large set of buildings with many state agencies. Foreigners usually come here for two reasons:

  • Immigration. The Bangkok immigration office handles visa extensions, changes of visa type, 90-day reports and other status questions.
  • Cyber police. Units of the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB) handle online fraud, money from scams and bank accounts linked to these cases.

The buildings are large and the queues can be long. Check the building, floor and opening hours before the visit, and come early.

Cyber police at Chaeng Watthana and Muang Thong Thani

The cyber police have several units. Some work at the Government Complex, others from offices in the Muang Thong Thani area in Nonthaburi, a short drive away. Foreigners are often sent from one office to the other because a case is handled by a specific unit and investigator, not by the building.

That is why the most important information is in the documents you already have: the bank’s letter or the police summons usually names the unit, the case and the officer. If you do not have it, ask the bank which police unit placed the hold. Account blocked by the cyber police

Why your case may end up there

Most cases start with the bank, not with the police. The usual chain looks like this:

  1. A transfer reaches your account from someone who later reports a scam, or from a P2P trade.
  2. The victim files a complaint, and the police ask the bank to hold the money.
  3. The bank freezes the account and tells you which police unit is involved.
  4. The investigator asks you to give a statement and explain where the money came from.

The police do not decide on intentions. They need to see clearly where the money came from, why it was sent and who the other side was. Many foreigners who did nothing wrong end up here because they cannot explain this in documents.

What to prepare before the visit

For the police

  • Passport and your current visa
  • The bank’s letter or the police summons with the case details
  • Bank statements for the period of the disputed transfers
  • Proof of each transaction: contracts, invoices, chats, exchange history
  • A short written explanation of every disputed transfer, in Thai and English

For immigration

  • Passport with all visa pages and the latest entry stamp
  • TM30 address report and the forms for your application
  • Documents for your type of stay, such as company or school papers
  • Photos and copies of every page they ask for

Lists change, and each officer can ask for more. Bring originals and copies of everything.

How the visit usually goes

  1. Confirm the details. The unit, the address, the officer’s name and the time.
  2. Arrive early and find the right building and floor. Expect to wait.
  3. Give your statement. The officer asks questions, often in Thai, and writes down your answers.
  4. Hand over the documents and make sure every transfer is explained.
  5. Agree on the next step. A second visit, more documents, a settlement with the complainant or a letter to the bank to release the hold.

A police hold is released with a letter from the police unit to the bank. Then the bank completes its own review before it releases the money. How the release letter works

Common mistakes

  • Going without confirming which unit and officer handles the case
  • Ignoring the bank’s letters until the account is fully blocked
  • Arriving without statements, contracts or proof of transfers
  • Explaining the situation casually, without documents
  • Telling a different story to the bank and to the police
  • Going alone when you do not speak Thai
  • Expecting one visit to close everything

A typical situation

Someone sells USDT on a P2P platform and receives baht from a buyer. A few weeks later, the bank freezes the account: the buyer’s money came from a scam victim, and there is a cyber police case. The person goes to Chaeng Watthana without documents, cannot explain the trade and is asked to come back.

On the second visit, everything is prepared: the exchange history, the chat with the buyer, the bank statements and a written explanation in Thai. The statement is taken, and the case can move towards a release letter. Every case is different, and the decision is the officer’s. Real cases we worked on

Questions we often hear

Do I have to go in person?

Often yes, especially for a statement. In some cases a representative can attend with a power of attorney. It depends on the officer.

Will I be arrested if I go?

In most account cases, you are asked to explain the transfers as a witness or a person whose account received the money. If the officer says you are a suspect, you need a lawyer, and we will bring one in.

Can the bank release the hold itself?

No. A police hold is released only with a letter from the police unit that placed it. After that, the bank completes its own review.

How long does it take?

From a few weeks to several months, depending on the unit, the number of cases on your account and how quickly the documents are ready.
